The Algarve is the southern most point of Portugal and boasts the most western point of mainland Europe (Sagres). The language spoken is Portuguese however a lot of hotels, restaurants and businesses speak good English and German. Portuguese is a romance language belonging to the same family of languages as French, Spanish, Italian and Romanian. Portugal is a member of the European union and therefore uses the Euro as it's currency. Spain borders Portugal on it's northern and eastern sides with the Atlantic to the west and across the sea to the south lies North Africa. Needless to say it gets very hot from May to September and Good hot weather can be had in either April or October. You can get good weather in the remaining months however it can get a bit chilly from November to February. If you like a round of Golf then there are plenty of top quality courses to choose from in the Algarve.
The Portuguese people are extremely friendly and welcome tourists especially in the Algarve as tourism is their main source of income. If you are fortunate enough to be asked to a traditional meal at a locals house we can fully recommend it as their hospitality and cooking is second to none. They eat a lot of fish, rice, pasta and salads as well as beef, pork and chorizo (smoked sausage). Vinho tinto (red wine) is drunk in copious amounts as is cerveja (beer) and both are very cheap to buy.
Portugal is rich in history, culture and religion with the majority of the people belonging to the Catholic church. Years ago this country help set the world map by travelling to India, South America and Africa. They boast pioneering explorers such as Magellan who circumnavigated the world and Henry the Navigator. You can still see a lot of Portuguese influence in the world today if you go to Goa, Brazil, Madeira, Mozambique and the Azores. In fact Portuguese is the 6th most spoken language in the world.
Lagos is very popular with tourists. This is a large town on the southern coast of the Algarve with so much to see. It has many shops, restaurants, bars, banks in fact everything you would expect back home except on top of this you have beautiful sunshine, beaches, Marina, Markets etc.

Odeceixe is a smaller, quieter more relaxed town which lies on the western coast of the Algarve. The people here are exceptionally friendly and there are some beautiful beaches for the family and more rugged coastline for windsurfers. There are quiet bars, restaraunts and shops; this is a great place to come and relax. Odeceixe is prefererred by those wanting a more relaxed holiday.
